through the tourist's eye

Trying to get Grandma & Granddad's newspaper photo in the wind...no easy task.

Lasagna in cooking!

This weekend was a fun and touristy version of Florence. My friend Laura (who goes to GSU with me) came in town for her winter break and I loved being her tour guide! We went to The Ufizi Gallery and looked at art for hours, which was wonderful. I haven’t been to many museums, so I wasn’t sure how entertained I would be, but the artwork was amazing. Famous artists’ paintings and things that are hundreds and hundreds of years old are on display in this gallery. Most of them were of Mary and Jesus, and Laura could tell me a lot of the stories behind the paintings. I also got in free with my University Card, which was a nice bonus.
I took her to the open market, my favorite Panini and gelato shops, and my two favorite restaurants Il Gate e La Volpe, and Dante’s. I got pasta with salmon the first night (and tiramisu…) and lasagna and bruschetta the next night. We also hiked up Piazzale Michelangelo where I got a picture of myself reading my Grandma and Granddad’s local newspaper for them to submit to the “Look Who’s Reading?” section. On Sunday we climbed up all 414 steps of the tower next to the Duomo and even got to go to a soccer game! Fiorentina won 2-1 against Chievo and I had such a great time at the game. I thoroughly enjoyed it, which is strange for me as a non-soccer (and mostly non-sports) fan. It didn’t hurt that Sunday was the warmest day I’ve experienced since moving here—it was the most perfect day to be at a soccer game.
Laura had to leave Monday morning, but I will be seeing her in about a month in Paris! I am so excited to explore that city.
I went to Hip Hop class on Tuesday night, and I’ve been doing my Insanity workouts a few times a week (which have been hopefully counteracting my worsening chocolate obsession). This morning in cooking we made homemade lasagna, which I WILL be able to make again at home…yay! I started my new book Water For Elephants yesterday and today in Italian class, our teacher asked us why Americans don’t wear Speedos or have topless beaches. I should start keeping a journal of all the strange conversations we have in there—one of my personal favorites has to be when we tried to explain to him what a bagel/cream cheese breakfast was. Other than that, school this week consists of wrapping up before getting into midterms next week, then it’s Spring Break! So excited for everything to come.
